CATSKILL — The Greene County Legislature honored Columbia County officials for their quick response and tireless work to aid communities during Tropical Storm Irene’s devastating impact on Greene County.

“I would like to say Columbia County helped us out during a very difficult time, they worked side by side with us and we’ve always had a good relationship with Columbia County. I’m so appreciative,” said Greene County Legislature Chairman Wayne Speenburgh, R-Coxsackie.

Columbia County officials were each awarded honor proclamations on behalf of the legislature.

“We have been genuinely moved by the evidence of your goodwill and we shall never forget your poignant expression of friendship,” said Speenburgh’s letter of gratitude.

The legislature welcomed Columbia County officials with a standing ovation and a healthy round of applause in recognition for all their efforts in the wake of the historic storm.

“You handled vital and necessary tasks and you are to be commended with our sincerest expression of gratitude for all you have done. It took the inspiring and unselfish efforts of people like you to help our citizens endure these forces of nature,” said an excerpt of the proclamation awarded to the Columbia County officials.

Valerie Bertram, chairwoman of Columbia County’s Public Safety Committee, said it was an honor to be formally recognized by Greene County.

“We, as a county were very fortunate to not have gotten as much rain as Greene County. When I rode out here the conditions were certainly an eye opener. I never witnessed such devastation,” said Bertram.

Speenburgh reminded the legislature that Columbia County workers were dedicating themselves to Greene County by assisting on Labor Day, with many being away from their own families for the holiday.

“I couldn’t help but notice that during this tragedy and its aftermath, people were everywhere trying to help other people. It seems that the old saying about a catastrophe bringing out the best in people is really true, as it was in evidence anywhere you looked,” said Speenburgh.

Many residents in communities like Prattsville were displaced due to the storms and county officials are still surveying infrastructure damages. Prattsville was severely impacted and received national media attention.

Earlier this week, the legislature approved 10 disaster relief loans to local businesses beginning to rebuild. Speenburgh said it marked the start of the county’s recovery. In addition, the Greene County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) approved $100,000 for disaster relief funding for county businesses.

" Still waiting for an answer to the question, Speen, "why hasn't Greene County applied for FEMA matching fund zero-interest loans to make up for the revenue shortfall impact of the floods?? Why just fixate on corrupting the 2% tax cap?

Still waiting, and I'll post that question in as many relevant venues available until you're shamed into addressing it. The taxpayers deserve no less (and a lot more than you've provided in sunshine or transparency. "
