Patroon hoops down the stretch

With just five games left in both the boys and girls varsity basketball season we have a pretty clear picture of what teams will sit atop the standings when all is said and done.
What we can’t tell just yet is who will finish 2-through-10, who will step their game up and who will clinch a sectional spot.
On the girls side Maple Hill is perfect at 13-0 in the league with Ichabod Crane (11-2) trailing close behind.
After the two top dogs, there are Hudson (8-5), Rensselaer (8-5), Catskill (8-5), Greenville (7-6) and Taconic Hills (7-6). All five teams have a shot at going to the postseason, but each squad will have to finish strong or they could be on the outside looking in.
Catskill seemingly has the toughest road leading up to sectionals. The Lady Cats have a relatively easy game with Chatham (1-12) today before taking on Maple Hill, Rensselaer, Hudson and Ichabod Crane. The Lady Riders were the only team to lose to Catskill in their first meeting, and if things go the same way this time around, the Lady Cats could be looking at a respectable 10-8 record.
Catskill may even be able to grab a couple extra wins and upset some of the top teams they face. Sarah Mokszycki and Katie Miller are both in the top 10 in the league in scoring with 140 and 110 points, respectively, and could lead their team in some late season upsets.
Taconic Hills also has a rough road ahead, as the Lady Titans face Hudson, Rensselaer, Ichabod Crane and Greenville before wrapping up the year against Cairo-Durham (1-12).
Lady Titans’ duo of Emma Gryner and Rachel Preusser have combined for an average of 20.2 points per game thus far, but Ichabod Crane has Rebecca Smith, who can change a game with her 11.2 ppg. Rensselaer’s Marissa Mendetta averages 11.3 while Greenville’s Taylor Anne Young averages 10.0. Taconic Hills has to find ways to deal with each of these star players if the Lady Titans want to stay in the postseason race.
None of the five teams have an easy schedule, per se, but both Hudson and Greenville play two teams with 1-12 records in their final five games. If the Lady Bluehawks and Lady Spartans win those games they will finish with records of 10-8 and 9-9, respectively, ensuring themselves playoff spots.
In boys action, Ichabod Crane holds the top spot at 13-0, followed by Maple Hill (12-1) and Rensselaer (11-2). Catskill (10-3) is the only other team guaranteed a postseason selection. Even if the Cats lost their final five games they would be 10-8.
On the cusp are Hudson (6-7) and Coxsackie-Athens (6-7). The Bluehawks have the best shot at earning a winning record as four of the five teams they face down the stretch have losing records. First up is Taconic Hills (1-12), then Cairo-Durham (3-10), Greenville (0-13), Catskill and Coxsackie-Athens.
With two players in the top five for scoring so far, Hudson shouldn’t have a problem. Larell Roberts (2nd, 15.6) and Jeff Crank (5th, 14.7) provide problems for all defenses they face.
The Indians on the other hand face stiffer competition in the coming weeks. Rensselaer, Chatham, Cairo-Durham, Maple Hill and Hudson all mark the calendar and the final matchup between Hudson and Coxsackie-Athens could determine which team moves on.
The game, on Feb. 12, will pit Hudson’s Roberts and Crank against Indians’ Nathan Tailleur, who averages 14.5 points per game.
The Patroon boys and girls get back on the court today after roughly a week of New York State Regents testing. In boys action, Coxsackie-Athens visits Rensselaer, Catskill plays at Chatham, Hudson travels to Taconic Hills and Cairo-Durham and Greenville play at Columbia-Greene Community College. For the girls, Rensselaer plays at C-A, Greenville is at C-D, Chatham visits Catskill and Taconic Hills plays at Hudson. All games start at 7 p.m.
