Theater owner Senator Kevin Mullin of Vermont dons bowtie and cummerbund to greet patrons at grand reopening

GREENPORT — Vermont state senator and new Movieplex 8 owner Kevin Mullin was dressed in his finest usher uniform — including bowtie and cummerbund — to take tickets on Friday at the theater’s grand-reopening.
People crowded into the theater to see first run movies such as “Planet 51,” and the fall’s surprise smash hit “Paranormal Activity,” as well as check out some of the upgrades and renovations the senator has already made to the theater.
“I’m just really excited to be in the Hudson community,” said Mullin. “I hope people will be proud to have this theater here.”
The show times and prices are the same as the previous theater, but Mullin has already replaced the old seats with rockers in theaters three and seven, and put digital stereo into theater number two. He also says that much of the theater has been repainted, and the ceiling over the snack bar replaced.
“We’ve been working like crazy,” said Mullin. “But there’s a lot more work to be done.”
The senator also plans on continuing to make improvements to the movieplex on a slower timeline, closing down one theater at a time for renovations and additions. Eventually, he hopes to not only install rocking seats in many of the theaters, but digital stereo sound, and even a 3D projector.
On top of the new seats and sound systems, Mullin hired back nearly all the employees CinemaNorth had let go, many of whom — like manager Marta Wilkinson — were glad both to have their jobs back and to be working with the new owner.
“I’m excited,” said Wilkinson, “and very glad to be back. [Senator Mullin] is going to be very nice to work for.”
She went on to say that all the additions and renovations would make the lives of all the employees safer and easier.
Though Bruce Mitchinson, the owner of Fairview Cinema 3, had also been interested in purchasing the Movieplex 8, he said that he was not worried about the competition, and that he feels that having more movie screens in the area can only benefit the community.
“I met with Kevin Mullin, the new owner of the Hudson Movieplex 8, welcomed him to the area, and wished him well,” Mitchinson said. “I believe that with our combined 11 screens, we will be able to bring all the movies that the local patrons wish to view, without going outside the county, as well as attracting patrons from outside the area. The Fairview Cinema 3 will operate as it has over the past continuous 37 years, as my loyal, supportive patrons have enjoyed, with some planned upgrades in technology.”
Mullin agreed that there was no real sense of competition between the theaters, only the desire to provide Columbia County residents with the widest variety of entertainment possible.
“Between the two of us,” he said, “we should be able to show practically every first run movie that comes out.”
The Vermont senator has also purchased another Movieplex 8 location near Corning, N.Y., where he plans to perform many of the same renovations he is working on with the Greenport theater.
