List of Veterans Day observances
CAIRO
Nov. 9: Sixth grade students from Cairo-Durham Middle School are reaching out to the community and inviting all area veterans to their special Veterans Day Celebration on Monday.
The program begins at 1 p.m., in the Cairo-Durham High School Auditorium. Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Navy, Army and Air Force veterans, their families and the community are invited and should begin arriving at 12:30 p.m.
This annual recognition event will include a series poems, dances and songs performed by students to show appreciation for all veterans. Light refreshments will be served after the performance.
CATSKILL
Saturday: Greene County will honor one of its residents as “Living Veteran of the Year.”
The Honor a Veteran Committee is now accepting applications from the public for those candidates who have distinguished themselves in the military and made significant contributions to the community.
The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m., on the Water Street side of the Greene County Office Building, at 411 Main St., in Catskill. The public is invited to attend. For more information, contact Jack Van Loan at 943-3703.
CEMENTON
Nov. 8: There will be a Veteran’s Day ceremony at 2 p.m., at the Cementon Sportsman’s Club in Cementon. The speaker will be Pat Harmon and role in World War II. Refreshments will follow the ceremony.
GREENVILLE
Saturday: The Greenville American Legion will celebrate Veteran’s Day with a series of events.
The 10th annual Military Ball will be held by the Post, at the Knights of Columbus in East Durham. Doors open at 7 p.m. Ceremonies are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and a buffet will be served at 8 p.m.
Dancing to the music of Bobby Vale will continue to midnight. Admission is $20 a person and reservation will insure a seat.
Nov. 11: An interfaith church service will beheld at 10 a.m., at United Methodist Church in Norton Hill, Route 81. This will be followed by a Traditional Eleventh Hour Ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park in Greenville, Pond Area.
After the ceremonies light refreshments will be served at the Post Home on Maple Avenue in Greenville. All veterans regardless of affiliation are urged to join their fellow veterans in these events as well as the general public. NEW BALTIMORE
Nov. 11: The monthly Food and Fun program, held at the New Baltimore Reformed Church located at the intersection of Route 144 and Church Street in the hamlet, is hosted for seniors and other members of the community.
The luncheons are at noon on the second Wednesday of the month and feature a meal followed by an entertaining or informative community interest program.
The Nov. 11 program will be a commemorative Veterans’ Day celebration. The meal will consist of a traditional Thanksgiving Day dinner which will include turkey, dressing and all of the fixings. Entertainment will be provided by Steve Schwebler’s One Man Band.
Reservations for this event which runs from noon until 2 p.m. are not required but would be appreciated to facilitate with planning. Call the church office at 756-8764 and leave your name, contact number and the number of reservations you are making for the meal. Dining space is limited to 50 seats.
PALENVILLE
Nov. 11: In observance of Veterans’ Day, The Palenville Fire Department will lay a wreath at the Veterans’ Monument adjacent to the Palenville Firehouse at 11 a.m.
The community is invited to attend. Refreshments will follow.
