Only half-day is for pre-K and Kindergarten children

CATSKILL — Catskill Central School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Farrell said Friday that an important factor for parents and guardians to remember this year is that the first day of school Wednesday will be a full day of school for all students in grades 1 through 12.
“There’s no half day this year,” Farrell said, “which is very different than every other year.”
“The only half day is for the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students,” she said.
Farrell said she has received a number of inquiries regarding the matter, so that she wanted to clarify it one last time.
She said the reason for the full day this year was due to the late date of Labor Day, which enters into people’s holiday plans, as well as contractual faculty agreements.
“There will be a half day for Kindergarten and, of course, the new Pre-K,” Farrell said, “with orientation for both PreK and Kindergarten on Wednesday.”
Catskill High School Administrative Assistant Cynthia Jacob also provided additional details on the day.
Jacob noted first that the high school’s alternate entrance will continue to be used for the time being.
“Due to ongoing construction,” Jacob said, “the entrance to the high school will continue to be at the rear of the building, through the gymnasium hallway doors.”
She said the new entrance will not be used until work there is completed, and everyone is notified that it is ready.
Regarding the start of the day, Jacob explained that ninth graders will first have an orientation.
“This year we have reconfigured our schedule and room use for our ninth grade teams,” Jacob said, “to incorporate a ‘house’ model of instruction.”
“For ninth graders and their parents or guardians,” she said, “an assembly will take place at 7:35 a.m., in the high school auditorium.”
“We will have breakfast snacks and introduce our team of teachers and support staff,” Jacob said, “and ninth grade students will have the opportunity to ask any questions before reporting to their first hour of class, to review their handbooks and try out their lockers.”
She said opening day equates to Day 1 on the student schedule calendar, and that at the start of the day all students should accordingly report directly to their Day 1, Period 1 class.
Jacob also said that morning schedule Career/Tech Ed students need to be at the campus for a 7:50 a.m. departure to Questar, and that they will receive their student handbooks from their guidance counselors.
She said afternoon schedule Career/Tech Ed students will get their handbooks and packets at the start of the day, in their Day 1, Period 1 classes.
She said Alternative Learning Programs students will receive their packets from their guidance counselors, and that both the afternoon schedule Career/Tech Ed students and all Alternative Learning students will return to the district for a 2:10 p.m. dismissal.
Farrell also noted that on Friday, Sept. 11, however, the district schedule will include some differences.
“On Friday,” she said, “each school will be running a morning of academics with special lunch and afternoon activities.”
“Catskill High School has an extracurricular and sports fair, Catskill Middle School has sport-themed school team building, and Catskill Elementary School has an anti-bullying assembly program,” Farrell said.
“And all are, of course,” she said, “precursors to Homecoming Weekend, and then Parents, Partners, and Pancakes on Sunday, Sept. 13.”

Farrell explained that in addition to Sunday’s fourth annual school community pancake gathering, the day will also include the formal ribbon cutting for the new on-site facilities.
“The pancakes are served from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., and the ribbon cutting is at noon,” she said.
“All of us are very excited to bring this project to our community,” said Farrell, “and hope that you will be able to share this good and positive time with us here in Catskill.”
