Walkers to light the way

Arthur Elementary School in Athens and the Coxsackie Elementary School sing along with singer/songwriter and author John Farrell as he debuts his song "So Your Light Will Continue to Shine" Tuesday at the Edwards school in Hudson. Farrell wrote the song to commemorate the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse and the Quadricentennial Celebration. The students will again sing the song as they participate in the Stewards of the Light walk-a-thon May 21 on the Rip Van Winkle Bridge.

COLUMBIA-GREENE — More than 400 students, teachers and parents from three area schools will hit the road — and the bridge — next week for the first ever Stewards of the Light Walk-a-Thon.

Participants from John L. Edwards Elementary School in Hudson, Coxsackie Elementary school in Coxsackie and Edward J. Arthur Elementary School in Athens will raise awareness and money for the historic Hudson-Athens Lighthouse.

Coxsackie-Athens Elementary School students, are no strangers to the lighthouse, though. Three years ago Jean Cardany, a second grade teacher at Coxsackie Elementary School, organized a field trip to the lighthouse. The trip was such a hit that the following year E.J. Arthur Elementary School teacher Michelle Whiting and students joined in. This year, for the first time, the Greene County schools will be met by approximately 130 John L. Edwards Elementary School students, teachers, administrators and parents from the Hudson City School District.

On Tuesday the second graders from all three schools met at the Hudson elementary school to sing songs with singer, songwriter and author John Farrell, who introduced a new song — So Your Light Will Continue to Shine.

The students, donning lightkeeper caps made of construction paper by John L. Edwards students, sang the song, and others, at the assembly.

“They were great,” said Louise Bliss, vice president of the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society. “They loved the song and had a great time with one another,” she added.

Bliss says it’s the students who are the future stewards of the light house, which has been a beacon of safety for river traffic for 135 years. The students, she says, have made a commitment to help preserve the lighthouse, and are demonstrating their commitments by walking from one side of the Rip Van Winkle Bridge to the other.

The May 21 walk-a-thon coincides with the students’ Quadricentennial curricula, which celebrate — and teach about — Henry Hudson’s 1609 voyage up the river that now bears his name.

Following the walk, students, teachers, parents and friends will bring picnic lunches to Cherry Ridge Farm in Greenport, where Farrell will host a sing-a-long.
