CATSKILL - Greene County school districts will be host to public information meetings as part of the Greene County Sheriff's Office Sex Offender Awareness Initiative.

These adults-only meetings will be hosted at each of the six school districts within the county. The first dates were announced last week:

* Catskill High School - March 10 at 6 p.m.

* Greenville High School - March 12 at 6:30 p.m.

* Coxsackie-Athens Middle School - April 2 at 7 p.m.

The Sheriff's Office is the primary agency responsible for monitoring and supervising sex offenders across the county - excluding the village of Catskill - and will open the floor to parents to discuss various topics.

Discussions will include sex offenders residing within the school district, the New York State Sex Offender Regulation Act, the difference between a pedophile and a non-pedophilic offender and how to talk to your children about sexual abuse.

Children are discouraged from attending these meetings.

Local police departments and the REACH center are also helping to coordinate these meetings, which are expected to last one to two hours.

Deputy Travis Richards, who is in charge of supervising sex offenders, is also spearheading the organization of the meetings.

"Deputy Richards has a vast knowledge of the state Sex Offender Regulation Act and has supervisory contact with local sex offenders on an almost daily basis," said Sheriff Greg Seeley. "He is a great resource for local parents and is more than willing to share information that will help keep our kids safer."

Times and dates for additional meetings will be made available as soon as they are announced.

"We are encouraging parents of all children to attend the meeting at their district," said Seeley. "We receive telephone calls and e-mails on a regular basis from local parents asking important questions about sex offenders and we believe the Sex Offender Awareness Initiative is a great way to get answers out to everyone."
