A day to fulfill holiday wishes

CATSKILL — The community has spoken — for the sake of the Christmas spirit.
This year’s Kids’ Community Christmas at the Second Baptist Church in Catskill will be bigger and better than ever, thanks to the many charitable organizations in Catskill and beyond.
“I’m very proud of the community because they really stood up for the children,” said Rev. Richard Turpin. “By the community coming on board it really is going to be a Kids’ Community Christmas.”
The event will be giving away 25 bicycles and an enormous amount of toys to local children this Saturday at 3 p.m.
This will be the second annual community Christmas event for the Second Baptist Church, following after an enormously successful 2007 Kids’ Community Christmas. Last year’s success even prompted the members of the church to promise a bigger and better 2008. Little did they know these harsh economic times nearly soured that hope.
Now, after reaching out to the gracious organizations throughout the community including the Heart of Catskill Association, Sullivan-Teator VFW Post 770, Watt’s Oil, and the Ecumenical Council — to name a few, their dreams will come true.
“We were able to buy a lot more toys,” said Annette Owens, committee chair for the event. “And we have things for every age group now, including teenagers.”
“We’re going to have everything we promised — and more!” Turpin affirmed. “That’s God at work for you.”
All are welcome to attend the event at the 456 Main Street church, and door prizes will be given out for those who come.
For the first time, a skit of the Christmas story will be performed by members of the church.
The members of the Second Baptist Church extend their warmest thanks for all the donations and hope that the community will come out to support their efforts.
“We just want to thank everyone for their help,” said Owens.
