5 more charged in rash of Mountaintop thefts
By Michael Ryan
JEWETT — Five more arrests have been made and additional apprehensions are expected in a recent rash of home burglaries on the mountaintop, according to Greene County Sheriff Greg Seeley.
Seeley, in a press release issued Tuesday, said that Carl Lundwall, 27, Hensonville; Heather Stancek, 20, Windham; and Michelle Baio, 19, Hensonville, were all charged with 2nd degree burglary related to the ongoing investigation.
Sheriff’s deputies and investigators, working with the Windham Police Department and Greene County District Attorney’s office, snapped a string of recent break-ins on Nov. 21, announcing the arrest of Thomas Truskolaski, 27, Hensonville, and Aton-Re Abdulkhabir, 22, Windham, along with two other local men.
Truskolaski, at that time, was charged with three counts of 2nd degree burglary, 2nd degree menacing and 2nd, 3rd and 4th degree criminal mischief while Abdulkhabir was charged with 2nd degree burglary and 3rd degree criminal mischief, police said.
Fresh charges have now been filed against both Truskolaski and Abdulkhabir, including 2nd degree burglary and 5th degree criminal possession of stolen property against Truskolaski and 2nd degree burglary against Abdulkhabir, police said.
Truskolaski and Abdulkhabir were arraigned in Jewett Town Court as a result of the Nov. 26 allegations that stem from a home invasion in September 2008 at 32 Blackberry Drive in the town of Jewett. The two men were remanded back to Greene County jail where they have been held since the Nov. 21 arrests, police said.
Lundwall was arraigned in Town of Ashland Court and sent to Greene County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail or $10,000 bond while Stancek and Baio were arraigned and both released on their own recognizance pending a later court appearance, police said.
All of the arrests resulted from an investigation into a Nov. 19 armed robbery at a residence on Big Hollow Road in Maplecrest which led to the closure of multiple open burglary cases on the mountaintop, police said.
Stolen items including rifles, alcohol, televisions, clothing and skis were recovered after the Nov. 21 arrests in Abdulkhabir’s home at 27 Old Route 23 in Windham. police said.
More pilfered property has been found that was reported stolen from 32 Blackberry Drive including a plasma television, Sony Playstation, jewelry, antiques and collectibles. police said. A portion of these items were recovered at the residences of Truskolaski, Lundwall and Baio, police said.
