Think BiG hosting ‘shop local’ event

CATSKILL — On Thursday in the village of Catskill participating stores, there will be offerings of 15 to 30 percent discount on local wares as part of the popular “Think BiG” program.

“Think BiG: Believe in Green. Buy in Greene,” the “buy local” initiative orchestrated by the Greene County Legislature, has caught fire all over the county, and downtown Catskill will be hosting its first “Think BiG Shop Local … Catskill” event this Thursday.

“Our goal is to promote Greene County’s new Think BiG program while giving our local economy a shot in the arm,” David Miles, co-owner of Hood & Company and coordinator of the Think BiG event in Catskill, said in a press release.

The Think BiG program will randomly award Greene County shoppers at participating stores county-wide with $250 gift certificates good at any participating shop, restaurant or venue. Winners could be selected any day of the week through Dec. 25.

The first 200 shoppers at participating stores in Catskill this Thursday will be given reusable Think BiG tote bags.

The following Catskill businesses will be participating and offering a significant one-time-only discount: The Bridal Shoppe (31 West Bridge Street) — 30 percent off store-wide; Hood & Company, housewares, linens and bath (432 Main Street) — 25 percent off store-wide; Looking Pretty (369 Main Street) — 20 percent off store-wide; Revolution, a contemporary women's store (428 Main Street) — 20 percent off store-wide; Verso Antiques (386 Main Street) — 20 percent off store-wide; Swamp Angel Antiques (349 Main Street) — 20 percent off store-wide; Mahalo Gifts (401 Main Street) — 15 to 20 percent off select items; Van Gorden’s Stationary (371 Main Street) — 20 percent off gifts, excluding books; Greene County Council on the Arts (398 Main Street) — 10 percent off art in small works exhibit and 20 percent off in Gallery Boutique; The Bottle Shoppe (391 Main Street) — 10 percent off any six 750 ml. or three 1.5 liter bottles of wine; N&S Bath Classics (352 Main Street) — Up to $500 off any purchase in December, see store for details; Imagine That! " They wouldn't need to beg people to shop in greene county if the prices and taxes were not higher then every where else in the state. Take gasoline- Greene county is, has been and probably always be around 20 cents per gallon higher then Albany, Columbia, Dutchess, Ulster counties. Go to Albany county this minuite- gas is under $2. It is a fact that everything cost more in Greene County. We will not be tricked. We live in Greene County, but refuse to shop or buy from any business with a Catskill or Greene County adress. We have saved so much money over the past few years, living by this practice, and will not be fooled by some crazy woman that sucks up to a bunch of looser punk cops in a raggity restaurant next to the police station. SHOP ALBANY/KINGSTON! SAVE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY! "
