Greene County Panthers ready for playoffs
By Austin Mort
CAIRO — The Greene County Panthers midget football team is set to begin the Capital District Pop Warner (CDPW) playoffs against Albany today.
The top-seeded Panthers will be seeking the first CDPW Super Bowl title in Greene County Pop Warner history. They completed regular season play with an 8-0 record, including a 27-0 romp against Sunday’s opponent.
Co-coach Lou Jobson credits the team’s focus and determination as major reasons for its success.
“We’ve been working hard and staying disciplined. We never look ahead to the next game,” said Jobson. “They just have a goal in mind of making it to the Super Bowl.”
As well, the group of 13-16-year-olds have played together for many years in the Greene County Pop Warner system.
“They’re a good bunch of kids, very disciplined, very respectful. The kids all have been in the organization for probably 10 years. They’ve pretty much all been together for a long time,” said Jobson.
The players attend schools all over Greene County and had to make a choice this season between playing for the Panthers or for their respective schools. According to Jobson, the players were determined to make a run at a CDPW title.
“Being that we were playing so well, JV teams wanted them to play for them. But they wanted to stay back to play in the Super Bowl. When you played so long and never made it that far, you want to try for it.”
Greene County will kick off the playoffs against No. 4 Albany Sunday at 2 p.m. at Angelo Canna Park in Cairo.
If the Panthers prevail, they will take on the winner of No. 2 Troy and No. 3 East Greenbush in the CDPW Super Bowl.
The team is co-coached by Jobson and Tim Hunt. Assisting them are James Chapman and Shawn Howard.
