Electronics Recycling Day scheduled at Catskill Commons
By Colin DeVries
CATSKILL — The Bank of Greene County is hosting an Electronic Recycling Day for the entire community, as the bank continues to provide valuable service to the community.
The Catskill Commons branch will be accepting computer, electronic, and household equipment on Saturday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The event is being operated by the eLot Recycling, and they will have teams on hand to unload materials from incoming vehicles. Recyclers will never have to leave their cars.
“This is an opportunity to let the bank show people we care about them,” said Rick Fernandez, manager of information systems at the Bank of Greene County. “And also an opportunity for them to get rid of their stuff... Everybody wins.”
Fernandez, who has doubled as organizer of this event over the past few months, was hoping to have this event in warmer weather but he’s hopeful it will still be a complete success.
“We’ve always been environmentally conscious,” he said on behalf of the bank. “Our general philosophy is to try to leave as little impact as possible on the environment.”
On top of that he said the bank prides itself on being “very community conscious,” and this event will continue to uphold that objective.
Examples of electronic materials that will be accepted are as follows: motherboards and misc. computer components, AC adapters, answering machines, boxes of wires, caller ID boxes, cell phones/car phones, telephones/telephone equipment, power supplies, routers/switches, server racks, pagers, electronic game systems, VCRs, DVDs, CD drives, floppy drives, tape drives, hard drives, CD burners, memory, projectors, cameras, blenders, can openers, coffee makers, fans, household lamps, microwaves, toasters, surge protectors, testing equipment, typewriters, and also household appliances will be accepted at this event.
No cans, paper products, plastics or bottles will be accepted.
Televisions will be accepted for a fee of $10.
Fernandez said that he meticulously researched eLot Recycling’s methods to ensure they will properly dispose of the materials. He said that they process everything themselves and re-use materials.
Monetary donations will also be accepted for Community Action. The funds will be going toward support of local food pantries to help feed the needy during the upcoming holiday season.
Fernandez said that he hopes this event will become a regular part of the community from year.
“I hope that it goes well,” he said. “The next place may be in Chatham or Ravena, we’ll see.”
All are welcome to bring their electronic recyclables, rain or shine.
