Empire, Dynabil get a green light

COXSACKIE — Town Supervisor Alex Betke began Tuesday night’s Town Board meeting with a moment of silence for Greene County Historian Raymond Beecher, who died last Thursday at the age of 91. Beecher also served as the historian for the Town of Coxsackie.

Developments underway

In a written statement, Town building inspector Ed Pebler said that both Empire Merchants North and DynaBil “have the go-ahead,” and that construction for DynaBil, an aerospace manufacturer, is well underway. The company, which supplies parts to military and private aerospace industries, is expanding its facility in the Greene Business and Technology Park.

Empire Merchants North, one of the largest beverage and alcohol distributors in New York, announced late last month a deal for the sale of 21 acres in Kalkberg Commerce Park in the Town of Coxsackie. According to Pebler construction has not yet started on the site, but it should begin shortly.

Going up?

Coxsackie Ambulance Service Chief Leon Rice recommended to board members raising the billing rate of emergency services as of the first of the year.

The ambulance service is currently contracted with MultiMed, a New York-based ambulance billing service.

According to Rice, Coxsackie is still behind some surrounding agencies, and still will be even after the proposed increase.

Patients are currently charged a base-rate, depending on the type of service they receive. There are three billing classes — basic life support (BLS), advanced life support (ALS I), and ALS II — and patients are charged based upon the scope of services provided to them. Additionally there is a per-mile charge from the site of the emergency to the hospital that a patient is taken to. Rice says that the current rate is $10 a mile, but that he has seen ambulance companies charge up to $15 per mile.

Under the proposed increase patients would be charged an additional $100 per billing class, and the per-mile cost would rise to $12 or $12.50.

According to Rice the ambulance service has only been in operation for two years, and has never raised its cost; before the service, which provides 24-hour, 7-day-a-week emergency care, Coxsackie residents depended on a volunteer to rescue squad to assist in emergencies.

Board members are expected to vote on the measure at next month’s board meeting, and if they choose to accept Rice’s proposal, he says that Coxsackie will still fall “somewhere in the middle” of surrounding municipalities.
