Richard Roberg, first NY Magistrates Association president from Coxsackie, honored at reception

COXSACKIE — The Pegasus Restaurant banquet hall was filled with friends, family and food on Saturday in honor of Coxsackie Town Justice Richard H. Roberg, who was recently elected to President of the New York State Magistrates Association.

“This is quite an honor. You work your way up the ladder, and it took me about 14 years,” said Roberg.

“Any honor you receive, you should earn it,” he said, “and after you receive it, you should prove why you earned it.”

Roberg was born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn in 1935. He attended New York City schools before graduating and attending SUNY New Paltz in neighboring Ulster County. After completing his undergraduate studies at New Paltz, Roberg earned a master’s of mathematics at Colgate University in Hamilton and a master’s of economics at SUNY Albany. He also returned to SUNY New Paltz and earned a certificate of advanced study.

Afterward he migrated north, and began teaching mathematics in the Coxsackie-Athens School District. In 1981 Roberg was elected as Town of Coxsackie Justice — a position which coincided with his teaching until 14 years ago, when — after 36 years — Roberg retired from the district.

He says that since he became justice more than two decades ago, the job has gotten more involved. He cites changes in domestics violence laws, and the penalties and enforcement associated with DWIs as examples.

Additionally, in an effort to consolidate, the Village and Town of Coxsackie merged their municipal court systems four years ago, and now Roberg sees all cases from dangerous dogs, to evictions, and more.

He says his new position as president of the state Magistrates Association — the first from Coxsackie — also comes with a considerable amount of responsibility.

A family affair

Roberg’s wife of 41 years, Roberta, organized Saturday’s celebration with friends, family, local officials, law enforcement and community members. Roberg’s children, Leif and Kirsten, along with their spouses, helped celebrate the milestone.

Greene County Legislature Chairman Wayne Speenburgh presented Roberg with a plaque on behalf of the county, acknowledging his achievements.

“I’ve known Richard Roberg for many, many years, and he’s always professional and always a gentleman,” said Speenburgh. “We’re proud of him in Greene County, and in Coxsackie for achieving this honor.”

For as long as he can remember, Roberg has been working, and at least for now, there’s no end in sight.

“A job like mine keeps you thinking,” said Roberg. “It keeps you young.”
