Second Saturday celebrated with wine tasting and cat racing
By Dollie Gull
CATSKILL — Several rolls of the dice determined the winners of the first “cat race” on Church Street in front of the Bank of Greene County during August’s Second Saturday Stroll in Catskill. The stroll was sponsored by the Heart of Catskill Association (HOCA) and the Catskill Chamber of Commerce.

The first race ended in a tie between 10-year-old Kaylin Holliday, a student at Catskill Elementary School, and 13-year-old Isabella Mitchell, a Catskill Middle School student. They participated in a run-off and Mitchell won.
At the old Catskill Firehouse, Derek Hood and the Spring Trio entertained with jazz and American standard pop tunes. The trio was composed of Hood from Hood & Company, David Spring, a well-known local musician on the keyboard, Andy Lopez on the drums, and Edward Walilewski on the bass.
Fireworks for the evening were provided by the folks at Mountain T-Shirt, Dunn Builders and Creekside Restaurant.
Another event of the day was “A Taste of Summer” — wine tasting sponsored by HOCA and Hudson Valley Wine magazine, a new publication from Flint Mine Press of Coxsackie. Participating in the event was Benmarl Winery, BashaKill Vineyards, Cascade Mountain Winery, Hudson-Chatham Winery and Silver Stream Winery, with “Cat’n Around Catskill” specially designed wine glasses provided by HOCA as a fundraiser for the continued promotion of downtown Catskill.
Also present at the “Taste of Summer” were representatives with fresh produce from Story’s Farms, River Street Bakers, Dancing Lamb Farm and Candyman Chocolates.
