Historical association explores landmark status
By Alvaro E. Alarcon
CAIRO — To answer a few questions, an area historic preservationist said researching deeds at Greene County government offices is not a lonely task and having a home as a historic landmark doesn’t mean there can’t be a porch on the back.
According to a presentation by Nick Nahas to the newly formed Cairo Historical Association Inc. in late December, there are a few levels of getting a building registered as a historic landmark. And, except for town registry listings, property owners can still develop their land despite having honorary landmark status.
“This is a big misconception that people have,” said Nahas.
Whether it is dedicated a landmark at the town, county, state or national levels does imply some different means in getting there.
Nahas, who spoke at Gallagher’s, a renovated Victorian era Cairo building owned by John Gallagher, is a chemical engineer with a historic home in Oak Hill. He spoke of the Durham Historic Preservation Commission attempts at getting the town’s stone arch bridges on the historic registry.
