School board approves YMCA extracurricular programs
By Donna Rich
ATHENS — The Coxsackie-Athens Board of Education voted Tuesday night to approve a before- and after-school program to be administered by the YMCA.
Greene County YMCA Executive Director Meredith Menzies gave a Power Point presentation outlining survey results and answering questions from both board members and the public regarding their proposed before and after school program.
On hand to help answer questions were Regina LaGatta, Executive Vice President of Capital District YMCA and Rayette Johnson, Director of Child Care Services of the Capital District YMCA.
At the February meeting, the board of education unanimously passed a resolution to allow the surveys to be sent home with the students. This resulted in 125 surveys being returned, a 17 percent return.
Results indicate that in Coxsackie there are 24 students in need of before and after school care, 32 students in need of after school care only and two students in need of before school care only. A no response was on seven of those returned. One survey response was, “Lack of after school care currently keeps one parent in my household from working or limiting income.”
Survey results from E.J. Arthur Elementary School parents indicate that there are 16 students in need of before and after school care, 21 students in need of after school care only, three were undecided and four “no” responses.
